Sometimes, it takes special techniques to overcome technical challenges. In this instance, the goal was to capture the ambience of the relatively dimly-lit interior space (the media center in a school) as well as the brilliantly-lit courtyard and sky. Because the range of values (light to dark) in this scene far exceeded the capabilities of the camera, it was necessary to make multiple exposures, then combine them using high-dynamic-range (HDR) techniques. While I frequently use these techniques for architectural photography, this is an extreme example of doing so. My ultimate goal is to capture existing light as closely as possible to what our incredible eye/brain systems do, naturally.
