This is one of those shots you always hope for, but when it happens, it lasts such a short time you're likely to miss it. This time I got lucky, with a little help from a friend.

My wife Joyce and I had been off exploring gravel roads somewhere between Colorado and Wyoming. OK, there's no "between" the two states. Truth is, we were near the border and not quite sure which state we were in. Sometimes, I'll just turn onto a road to see where it goes, and occasionally get lost; Joyce, on the other hand, tends to want to know exactly where we are and where we're going. This time, I should have listened. We eventually found our way back to the main highway, almost out of gas, just as storm clouds were clearing and the sun was setting. To the east, a rainbow appeared. I hit the brakes, turned onto a rancher's dirt lane, jumped out of the car, feverishly set up the camera and framed and focused the image while Joyce kept handing me stuff, and managed to get this shot, with a single exposure, moments before the rainbow disappeared. This remains my all-time speed record for using a view camera.
